Campbelltown will host the China PR national football team for an eight-day pre-competition camp as part of training preparations for AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015.
The agreement will see China based in Campbelltown and train at the Campbelltown Sports Stadium from December 29, 2014 to January 5, 2015.
Campbelltown is the second Australian venue to secure a pre-competition training base for a national team and the selection is great news for Western Sydney.
Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Clinton Mead, said the agreement was a vote of confidence in the Campbelltown Sports Stadium, and would be a significant economic boost for the region.
“The Chinese team coming to Campbelltown will no doubt give an international profile to what is one of Australia’s most dynamic and important regions,” Cr Mead said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Campbelltown to be on display to China – Asia’s economic powerhouse.
“Campbelltown has been selected because of the quality of the stadium’s playing surface, our city’s strategic location, as well as our warm and friendly hospitality – all of which says a lot about the first-class facilities and the great people that make up our city,” Cr Mead added.
AFC Asian Cup Australia Local Organising Committee Chief Operating Officer Mark Falvo welcomed the news that Campbelltown would host China.
“The LOC wanted to ensure the Asian Cup brought benefits to areas away from the main competition venues and team hotels, which is why we developed the Pre-Competition Camp program,” Mr Falvo said.
“Allowing Campbelltown and Western Sydney to share in the benefits of hosting such a significant international event brings great recognition to the area.
“With a team and delegation of about 35 people staying in Campbelltown for eight days, that is a significant economic boost for the region and a chance for the Asian Cup to reach more people.”
