Son Heung-min has been named UEFA’s Player of the Week after his brace for Bayer Leverkusen in their UEFA Champions League win over Zenit St Petersburg last week.
The honour continues Son’s bright start to the season with the Bundesliga outfit, having already scored four times in the Bundesliga’s opening ten rounds. While, if you include the qualifying playoffs, his two goals in Russia take his Champions League tally to five this year.
According to UEFA, “the success in Russia was inspired by Son, the first South Korean to score two goals in a UEFA Champions League match, his curling shot after a clever free-kick move followed by a cool run and finish.”
Speaking after the match Son was quite rightly proud of his achievement.
“It was certainly something special to score my first double in the Champions League,” Son said. “I think that’s just extraordinary.”
Son has shot to stardom in the last few seasons in Germany, firstly with Hamburg and lately with Bayer Leverkusen, and looks set to be one of the stars of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, which will take place in Australia in January.
