Tajikistan’s Istiklol on Friday followed up their third league championship with a Tajik Cup triumph after beating Regar-TadAZ 5-2 on Sunday.
The hero of the day was team leader Dilshod Vosiev, who completed a hat-trick. Regar-TadAZ’s Akhtam Khamrakulov scored both of his team’s goals from set pieces, but they were far short of the strength needed to overcome the league winners.
“This is a win for the players and for the fans,” Istiklol manager Mubin Irgashev told reporters after the match. “I feel proud to be the manager of a club that has these players, who put in effort and hard work all year, and of the fans, because they got us here.
“I should thank our opponents for a beautiful game. They made it very hard for us and I want to tip my hat. It has been a difficult year, but they’ve all worked very hard and we must thank them.”
Regar-TadAZ manager Alisher Khakberdiev also addressed the media: “Istiklol showed that they are stronger than us. This defeat can be a lesson for the future and shows us that there is a long road ahead.
“We got a bit demoralised because everything they did worked and nothing came off for us.”
Istiklol will make their continental debut next year when they represent Tajikistan as league champions in the 2015 AFC Cup.
