Group A was rounded out on Saturday with Oman earning their first and only three points of the tournament with a 1-0 win over Kuwait in Newcastle.
A 68th minute header by Abdulaziz Al-Muqbali was enough for the Omanis to end their AFC Asian Cup campaign on a positive note, despite Kuwait taking 17 shots to their five.
Without a shot on goal registered in the first half of the match, Kuwait made numerous attempts that often flew over the crossbar, while Oman failed to threaten in attack.
Abdulaziz’s goal was not only Oman’s first and only goal of the game, but was also their first goal of the tournament after having conceded five goals in the previous two matches.
The win was Oman’s first in an Asian Cup since the 2004 edition and marked their first goal over a total of 20 attempted shots that were either saved or off-target.
The two sides are now out of the tournament after South Korea and Australia finished Group A in first and second, respectively.
