Philippines coach Thomas Dooley has recalled Neil Etheridge in his 23-man squad for his side’s friendly against Bahrain on March 30 in Manama as preparations for June’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers continue.
The Charlton Athletic goalkeeper is set to win his first cap since August after missing out the last AFF Suzuki Cup, while Javier Patino has also been named in the selection as the Henan Jianye striker looks for his fourth international cap with the Azkals.
England-born skipper Rob Gier has kept his spot at the heart of defence and could potentially be paired with Filipino-Spanish defender Alvaro Silva, who had a successful campaign with Kuwaiti giants Al-Qadsia after winning the AFC Cup last year.
Other foreign-based representatives in the squad include Rolland Muller from Switzerland’s Servette FC and Esbjerg’s Danish-born midfielder Jerry Lucena.
“We’re embarking on a training camp in Bahrain,” said Dan Palami, the team manager. “We have new players coming in and get them familiar with each other as well as the new system.
“Coach [Dooley] intends to implement a new formation in friendly match that we might use for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.”
