Philippines national team coach Thomas Dooley revealed that Stephan Shrock will return to the Azkals squad as he needs new players ahead of 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
The Filipino-German midfielder, who plays for Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga.2, issued an apology following his short retirement last year when he announced he didn’t want to play for the national team with Dooley in charge.
“Schrock is definitely coming back,” the 53 year old coach said. “He already made an apology and admitted that he was wrong.
“He said that he just got angry when he was injured and has to be taken out. Now, he realises that he has to follow rules. But, of course everybody makes mistakes.”
Dooley also hinted that Philippines, who have been placed in Pot 3 ahead of Tuesday’s draw, are on the hunt for short-term progress as the Southeast Asian nation begins to concentrate on its domestic player pool.
“For the short term, we are taking in players who can play on a higher level than the United Football League before developing our local-based players in order to compete with the rest of the world,” he explained.
