As Iran prepare to learn their opponents in Tuesday’s World Cup/Asian Cup qualifying draw, it is increasingly clear that they will enter the group stage under the leadership of Carlos Quieroz.
Iran Football Federation (FFIRI) president Ali Kafashian this weekend insisted that Carlos Queiroz has agreed to remain his position as Team Melli head coach, reversing his declaration last month that he would resign.
“We managed to agree in some terms with Queiroz,” said Kafashian. “I will not say all of the issues have been resolved, but the majority of them could be said to be so.”
However, Kafashian revealed that the deal was conditional and dependent on the former Real Madrid’s coach regarding financial issues as well as team facilities.
“His stay will be on conditions made in his contract and financial terms,” Kafashian continued, “and his major concerns about the preparation of national squad are to be addressed by both [the FFIRI] and the Ministry of Sports.
“We believe Queiroz seeks the best conditions for national squad. We know many conditions are not ideal, but we have promised to solve these problems as far as our capabilities and budget allowance.”
Team Melli, who as the top FIFA-ranked team in the AFC have been placed in Pot 1, will be looking to achieve their fifth World Cup appearance
