Becamex Binh Duong defender Michael Nguyen is ready to demonstrate his quality for Vietnam’s national team ahead of joint qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup.
The 25-year-old received a surprise call-up from Toshiya Miura to attend the Golden Star’s camp for their upcoming match against Thailand on May 24, despite having failed to record an appearance in the current V-League season.
“It’s like a dream come true to play again for the national team,” the twice-capped Czech-born defender told Bongdaplus.
“My dad is Vietnamese and he wanted me to play, show my dedication for this country, and learn more about the culture. I want to prove that I deserve to get this opportunity.
“I’m confident with my physical condition and have tried to improve it despite not playing much V-League,” he added. “But I’ve played in the AFC Champions League and that’s given me more confidence.”
Before joining Binh Duong this year, Nguyen spent several years with Czech 2. liga side Banik Most. His international debut came in a 2-1 loss to UAE in a February 2013 Asian Cup qualifier.
