A “chance” meeting between a dolphin and a bee may have given Japanese fans the clearest indication yet that Bundesliga darlings Borussia Dortmund will travel to play J-League side Kawasaki Frontale this July.
The club’s week-long Asia tour, previously confirmed by team officials, will see the DfB Pokal finalists play in Singapore and Malaysia as well as Japan.
A YouTube video released on Friday by Frontale showed Dortmund’s mascot Emma penning an invitation to Frontale mascot Fronta-kun. The letter mentions an introduction via kit-makers Puma, who sponsor both clubs.
One day later, pictures of the river dolphin’s visit to Dortmund’s headquarters were posted on the mascot’s official Twitter account.
The still-unconfirmed friendly, which will likely take place in early July between the J-League’s first and second stages, would mark the first-ever appearance in Japan as a Dortmund player for Shinji Kagawa. The Samurai Blue star last visited the country for club duties in 2013 as a member of Manchester United.
The match will likely take place at Frontale’s home ground of Todoroki Stadium, which opened its renovated main stand in March.
