Spanish outfit defeated 3-2 in a hard-fought comback in Friday night’s international club friendly at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Villarreal dominated the early early game, controlling possession and feeding opportunity to threaten the opponents’ defense.

However, the side went ahead first in the 34th minute following a Sergio Cirio’s fast break to set up a goal which was converted by defender Craig Goodwin with his first-time shot.

Michael Marrone doubled the lead for The Reds in the 51st minute with a close range header from a curling Goodwin corner after the 28-year-old defender was left unmarked inside the box.

Villarreal pulled a goal back in the 65th minute after making half a dozen changes to their line-up in the early second-half, through Michael Trigueros’ strike found the net.

The Yellow Submarine equalised four minutes before the final whistle following a decent cross from Denis Cheryshev which reached Luciano Vietto, then listed his name on the scoreboard before Gerard securing a victory in injury time.

The Spanish powerhouse are scheduled to play their second match during their Australian summer tour against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on June 3.
