Spanish outfit Villarreal defeated Adelaide United 3-2 in a hard-fought comback in Friday night’s international club friendly at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Villarreal dominated the early early game, controlling possession and feeding opportunity to threaten the opponents’ defense.
However, the A-League side went ahead first in the 34th minute following a Sergio Cirio’s fast break to set up a goal which was converted by defender Craig Goodwin with his first-time shot.
Michael Marrone doubled the lead for The Reds in the 51st minute with a close range header from a curling Goodwin corner after the 28-year-old defender was left unmarked inside the box.
Villarreal pulled a goal back in the 65th minute after making half a dozen changes to their line-up in the early second-half, through Michael Trigueros’ strike found the net.
The Yellow Submarine equalised four minutes before the final whistle following a decent cross from Denis Cheryshev which reached Luciano Vietto, then listed his name on the scoreboard before Gerard securing a victory in injury time.
The Spanish La Liga powerhouse are scheduled to play their second match during their Australian summer tour against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on June 3.
