Devandran Savindran was the Malaysia U-23’s hero after his first half strike clinched a 1-0 victory over Timor Leste U-23 it their first match of 2015 SEA Games, making light of the dismissal of Nazmi Faiz.
Harimau Muda dominated the match, which was held at Bishan Stadium on Saturday night, since the beginning and took the lead in the 14th minute after the Pahang youngster Saarvindran found the net through his low effort.
The match’s tension went high, when Filipe Oliveira argued on Nazmi Faiz and his reaction to the incident made the referee Foo Chuan Hui promptly showed him a straight red card in the 32th minute after discussing with the fourth official.
Despite playing with 10 men, Ong Kim Swee’s men continued to dominate the match but failed to double their lead over Timor Leste.
Angissu Barbossa came close to equalise for O Sol Nascente squad four minutes before the final whistle, but his free kick was denied by goalkeeper Mohd Farhan Abu Bakar.
The victory gave Malaysia three points but sit on the third of Group B due to goal differences between them, Vietnam and Thailand, whcih botth won 6-0 in their opening fixtures.
