Reza Ghoochannejhad has encouraged Iran to ensure they do not assume they can ease past Turkmenistan when the sides meet on June 16.
Team Melli will face Turkmenistan at Sport Toplumy Stadium Dashoguz in their opening campaign of joint qualifiers of 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup campaign this month.
“Each game in the World Cup qualification road is important and we must not underestimate small teams,” the 30-year-old told Tasnim News Agency.
“In the first step towards next World Cup we will face Turkmenistan which is not an easy opponent. Before that we will take Uzbekistan in friendly which is a simulation match for Turkmenistan game.”
Iran were pitted in Group D along with Oman, India, Turkmenistan and Guam. Many believed that his team are favourite to finish on top of the group and Ghoochannejhad is determined to get positive results.
“We have to get a good result in the preliminary qualification round,” the Al Wakrah striker added. “In the previous campaign we faced many difficulties, so this time we will try our best to qualify more easily.”
