Singapore U-23 coach Aide Iskandar believes that the former FC Metz youngster Adam Swandi has got the attributes to emulate the Andrea Pirlo’s role in Italy for the Young Lions.
The 19-year-old played as a deep-lying midfielder rather than his natural position as attacking midfielder during the 2015 SEA Games campaign, but Aide is confident Adam can adapt into his new position.
“For Adam, one thing good about him is that he has sublime technique quite similar to Pirlo.” the former Courts Young Lions tactician told ESPN.
“So as he grows older, he might drop a bit deeper because he can orchestrate the play from the back. I’m sure he can excel now because he knows how to attack and at the same time he knows how to defend.”
It was not the first time Aide made a tactical experiment on his players’ position, previously he also instructed Irfan Fandi which has a striker role to become a defender in several games before the tournament started.
“You can see top European players, they are able to play in many different positions. Just like Irfan, he can play in defence and also attack. Don’t be surprised if he plays in midfield as well,” he added.
