A Nigerian footballer David Faramola Oniya has died of a suspected heart attack after collapsing on the pitch during a club’s friendly match in Malaysia.
The 30-year-old defender of Terengganu T-Team suddenly fell to the turf during his side’s match with Malaysia Super League outfit Kelantan FA.
He was immediately attended to and then taken to hospital in an ambulance but did not receive medical treatment quick enough, according to the CEO of T-Team, Syahrizan Mohd Zain.
“He suffered a heart attack but it could have been a different story had the ambulance driver been alert,” he told the New Straits Times.
“Our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes and he was pronounced dead at the hospital about 30 minutes later.”
The match continued for 60 minutes but was called off after word of Oniya’s death, the player who had played for three clubs in Uzbekistan and one in Azerbaijan before moving to T-Team, reached the pitch.
