Brazilian veteran forward Robinho has announced his departure from Santos after refusing a proposed extension to his contract.
The 31-year-old has reportedly reached a deal to join Chinese Super League giants Guangzhou Evergrande, who recently announced former Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari as their new manager.
“I want to thank the fans for their support and respect as well as the coaching staff and players, who will be friends for a lifetime,” Robinho said in a statement regarding his decision.
“Unfortunately I wasn’t able to renew my contract, but Santos will always be in my heart. I am still going to support the club and hope that one day I can return.”
With over 200 appearances in European competitions from his ten years with Real Madrid, Manchester City and AC Milan, Robinho will arrive in China armed with vital experience, despite being in the twilight of his career.
Robinho’s signing to the 2013 AFC Champions League winners would represent another top capture after the club on Monday announced the arrival of Paulinho from Tottenham Hotspur for $15m.
