Socceroo striker Nathan Burns has accepted an offer to join FC Tokyo on a full transfer, officials from his club Wellington Phoenix confirmed on Friday morning.
The 27-year-old will arrive in Japan later in the day to undergo a medical and sign with the capital city side, who finished second in the J1 League’s recently-completed First Stage.
“We expected this to happen given the season Nathan had with us,” Phoenix general manager David Dome told The World Game. “It became even more likely when he won the Johnny Warren medal for the best player in the A-League.
“[He’s] been terrific for [us] and we wish him well in the future.”
In addition to Burns’ confirmed move, Spain’s Mundo Deportivo on Thursday reported that Girona striker Fran Sandaza will also sign with Tokyo on Friday.
The 30-year-old Spaniard, who scored 16 goals for Girona in their 2014-15 Seguna Division campaign, has previously played for Scottish clubs Rangers, St. Johnstone, and Dundee United.
The two signings come over one month after Tokyo manager Massimo Ficcadenti told Football Channel that the team would bring on “one or two players” to replace star striker Yoshinori Muto, who joined Germany’s Mainz this summer.
