Philippines international Jerry Lucena has signed a one-year contract extension with the Denmark top division club Esbjerg fB.
The 34-year-old versatile Azkals midfielder agreed terms on a new deal as a player-assistant coach, which will keep him at the Blue Water Arena until the end of 2015/16 season.
“I am very glad that EfB has given me the opportunity to join in Esbjerg with a slightly alternative contract,” said the Denmark-born on club’s official site.
“I am aware that it will not become as much playing time, but my role is more to preserve the culture of the squad and help young people, so they know how it is to be a EfB player.”
Lucena came up through the ranks at Esbjerg but was sold to AGF Aarhus in 2007. He enjoyed an excellent spell with the rival club before moving back to boyhood club five years later.
Despite having previously featured in the Denmark U-21, Lucena decided to switch his eligibility to represent Philippines. He made his international debut in March 2011 against Palestine and since then he has been capped 30 times.
