Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland have confirmed the signing of Australia young winger Awer Mabil from Adelaide United in a lucrative deal believed to be worth more than $1 million.
The 19-year-old’s deal is considered to be the most expensive transfer in Hyundai A-League history, breaking the $1.3 million transfer record set by Rostyn Griffith from Central Coast to China’s Guangzhou in 2012.
“I would like to thank Adelaide United for allowing me to pursue my dream of playing in Europe for a very strong and ambitious club that sets high standards,” said Mabil.
“A big thank you to my coach Josep Gombau and the rest of the staff at Adelaide United for helping my development as a player and person.
“Special mention to all my teammates who have supported my transition,” the 2012/13 National Youth League Player of the Year added.
Although born in Kenya to South Sudanese parents, Mabil qualifies for Socceroos after he had attained residency status since moved to Australia in 2006.
