Samurai Blue backup goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda will miss the East Asian Cup due to poor physical condition, his club FC Tokyo announced on Thursday afternoon.
The Japan Football Association are yet to announce a replacement for the 26-year-old, who played a key role in Japan’s 2013 East Asian Cup title when he started in Japan’s 3-2 win over Australia.
With presumptive starter Eiji Kawashima still looking for a club and backup Shusaku Nishikawa suffering from a recent drop in form, the week-long tournament represented a chance for Gonda to impress coach Vahid Halilhodzic.
Gonda’s most recent international appearance came in March when he was named the surprise starter in coach Halilhodzic’s Japan debut, a 2-0 win over Tunisia.
Nishikawa and Gamba Osaka goalkeeper Masaaki Higashiguchi have also been summoned for the the subregional competition, which will take place between August 2 and 9 in Wuhan, China.
