Half-Malaysian Dion Cools happy to help Club Brugge progress in Champions League

’s new signing was on target and helped his team to enter the European Champions League play-offs after winning their respective third-round qualifiers on Wednesday.

The Belgian Pro League side overturned a first-leg deficit to oust Greece’s Panathinaikos from the competition with the Belgian-Malaysian defender providing one goal and an assist to deliver a 3-0 victory and a 4-2 aggregate success.

“I’m happy to contribute my part in the Club Brugge’s success in Champions League campaign,” said the 19 year-old Sarawak-born after the game.

“Actually I was suprised to know that my name was included in the first team squad. That encouraged me to prove that the coach didn’t made any mistake to put his trust in me.”

Dion, who has already represented Belgium U-19 at international level, is eligible to represent through his mother heritage and previously has revealed his desire.

“It would be an honour for me to play for Malaysia,” he said. “I’ve actually asked my mother if the possibility is there, but realistically I will need to advance my trade here in Belgium first.”
