A traditional curtain-raiser to the new season of Egyptian football, the Super Cup will be played outside the country for the first time in history this summer.
The news was confirmed by Egyptian Football Association (EFA) which stated that Cairo Derby between the league winners Zamalek and cup champions Al Ahly will take place in Dubai after making an agreement with unnamed sponsor.
“Staging a Super Cup match abroad is not a novel concept and there are many countries who have made that move such as Saudi Arabia who will play their Super Cup in London this year,” said EFA president, Gamal Allam.
Meanwhile the EFA board member, Mahmoud El Shamy denied the statements that the Super Cup game was moved abroad due to security reasons in the North African country.
“The game will be staged in Dubai for marketing purposes and not for security reasons,” he insisted.
