Assistant coach Ismail Mahfooz has been appointed as caretaker coach of Maldives national team and will lead the team when they host China in 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup qualifiers next month.
Football Association of Maldives (FAM) decided to appoint Mahfooz, who commonly know as Imma, following Bulgarian head coach Velizar Popov’s resignation from his role on Wednesday.
“In the match gainst China, Imma will lead the national team and we are working to appoint a coach for the national team as soon as possible,” said Mohamed Shaweed as normalization committee chairman.
“We have discussed the issue in our technical committee and they don’t want to bring a coach just to fill the post soon.
“They want a reputed high profile coach with a good CV and as you all know it would be very difficult for us to bring such a coach for a long term period. So we will bring a coach for a short term basis. Our main target is to win the SAFF Championship.”
FAM is continuing its search for a permanent replacement for Popov but confirmed that Imma will be in charge even if the new coach was appointed before the match against China.
