Iran national team head coach Carlos Queiroz admitted that he was surprised by India’s spirited performance in joint qualifying of 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup campaign against his team on Tuesday.
Despite having 3-0 comfortable victory at the Sree Kanteerava stadium in Bangalore, the Team Melli tactician claimed that India put his side under unexpected pressure, particularly in the first half.
“I must say the way India started, we were a bit surprised. We didn’t expect them to play with so much determination. They caused us a lot of problems,” said the Portuguese coach.
“I would like to congratulate the players from both teams. It was a good game and a competitive game. Both teams wanted to win and get three points.
“I don’t think India played defensively. We felt the pressure in the start and we didn’t expect that. It was necessary for us to fight and play in full concentration. We felt the pressure from India in the first half,” he concluded.
Moreover, the 62-year-old also advised India to take responsibility of the game in their own country rather than waiting for foreigners to improve football within the nation.
“My message to India is don’t wait for foreigners to come and improve football in India. That has to be done from within,” added Queiroz.
