Former Barcelona skipper Xavi has maintaned his strong start to life in Qatar, scoring his first goal for Al-Sadd in a draw with Umm Salal.
It was his second game for the Qatar Super League side on Thursday. Xavi equalised the match in the 62nd minute, half-volleying Hassan Khalid’s cut-back into the bottom corner from 12 yards after Yannick Sagbo gave Umm Salal the lead.
Not only did the 35-year-old bag his first goal, the Spaniard also assisted Al Sadd’s other goal in their 2-2 draw at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, Doha in a top-of-the-table clash in the QSL this season.
Regardless of Xavi’s brilliant individual display, Al-Sadd coach Hussein Amouta was frustrated with his team’s performance after only securing one point at home.
“To be brutally honest, our defence did not play its role properly and I do not know the secret to this,” he said.
“It is enough to say that Umm Salal managed to score their first goal through their very first counter-attack and although we managed to return to the game and got two goals, another defensive blunder brought the match back to the starting point.
“This is what we did not wish to happen. We are playing for the title and we should not lose two points at the beginning of the campaign.”
