Hong Kong punished over booing fans

football authorities confirmed on Tuesday that the city was fined by FIFA after its fans mocked the Chinese national anthem and threw an object at a rival player during a recent World Cup qualifier. 

Many fans present during Hong Kong’s match against Qatar – which the hosts lost 3-2 – booed the Chinese national anthem “March of the Volunteers” while one spectator launched a carton of lemon tea at one of the Qatari players.

As a result, Hong Kong faced various possible sanctions from FIFA, including having future matches played behind closed doors, but ultimately the global governing body decided that a fine and a warning would suffice.
