Guangzhou Evergrande were crowned Asian Champions League for the second time on Saturday after defeating Al Ahli 1-0 in the second leg of the final.
Brazilian striker Elkeson scored on 54 minutes in the game at Tianhe Stadium and it was enough to see the Chinese Super League champions lifted the trophy after the first leg in Dubai finished goalless draw.
A tense raised when Salmeen Khamis was sent off on 66 minutes for the UAE giants for a stamp on Zheng Long. The task appeared beyond Al Ahli but they almost snatched a goal in the closing stages as Lima raced in behind the backline, but his shot was blocked.
Cosmin Olariu’s side poured men forward in the closing minutes but Guangzhou defended stoutly and, though Elkeson blazed over on the break late on, the Guangzhou sent the home fans into raptures as the final whistle sounded.
The triumph also helped Luiz Felipe Scolari to become the second coach to win both the FIFA World Cup and Asian Champions League after ex-Guangzhou boss Marcello Lippi in 2013.
