The quota of foreigners for S.League clubs will be reduced from five to three next season, according to sources involved in professional football in Singapore.
The cap on foreign players could be timely news, after confirmation that the LionsXII will not feature in the Malaysian Super League next season. The future of the team’s 27 players remains in doubt, with Football Association of Singapore (FAS) saying that it will sit down with each player individually to assist them.
The LionsXII’s participation in the Malaysia Super League over the last four seasons has drawn flak, with many observers saying it hindered Singapore’s domestic league. The S.League has recently had to suffer poor attendances and dwindling interest.
With the reduction in the number of foreign players, the way for the LionsXII’s players to join S.League clubs could be smoother.
Members of the local football fraternity are divided on whether it will be a positive move.
