German tactician Frank Bernhardt has been appointed the new coach of Malaysia national team U-23, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) announced on Wednesday.
The 46-year-old, who has led a host of clubs in his home country and Estonia in a coaching career that began in 2001, has agreed a one-year deal with FAM.
“Today the committee agreed to the appointment Bernhart after recommendations from the National Sports Council (NSC) panel,” the FAM’s Special Functions Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Mokhtar Ahmad told reporters.
“His (Bernhardt) appointment is for two days effective January 2016, primarily until the 2017 SEA Games hosted by Malaysia.”
Mokhtar also revealed that Bernhardt’s priority would be to win the 2017 SEA Games gold medal since Malaysia are the host.
