The third playoff round of 2016 Asian Champions League will take place on February 9 to determine last eight teams for the group stage. Three Southeast Asian clubs including Vietnamese side Ha Noi T&T and Thai outfits Chonburi and Muangthong United will play away against more reputable opponents. We look at five local names who can potentially make the difference for the underdogs and deserve attention in the upcoming games.
Kroekrit Thaweekarn (Chonburi)
Kroekrit scored Chonburi’s decisive goal to help the Sharks edge out Yangon United to reach the final playoff round where they will challenge FC Tokyo from Japan. In the last year’s playoff against Kashiwa Reysol, the 26-year-old has scored a wonder goal with the curler in the edge of the box but his side eventually lost 2-3 after extra time.
Thais fans are expecting the midfielder to repeat his good display in the coming Tokyo clash with the hope of seeing Chonburi through to the group stage for the first time since 2008.
