Defending Singapore Cup and League Cup champions Albirex Niigata clinched the first three points of the 2016 S.League season on Saturday evening at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The White Swans beat reigning S.League winners Brunei DPMM 3-2 in the Community Shield, which also doubles up as a league fixture.
Albirex defender Mikiya Yamada opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the game and Hiroyoshi Kamata made it 2-0 at half-time.
The Japanese side continued dominating the game in the second half, with Kento Fujihara sliding home the third goal of the night at the 59th minute.
Brunei midfielder Azwan Ali Rahman pulled one back for his side minutes later and an own goal from Albirex defender Naofumi Tanaka made it 3-2 at full-time.
Since the match also served as 2016 Singapore Community Shield, Albirex Niigata had claimed their first trophy in 2016.
