If U-23 fails to win gold medals at the 2017 , head coach Nguyen Huu Thang as well as most of VFF officials should resign, deputy chairman told local newspaper.

Vietnam national under-23 football team has never won gold medal at the SEA Games – something Vietnam Football Federation has been very determined to change. However, despite the federation’s best efforts, Vietnam U-23 only reached semi-finals at the 2015 SEA Games before getting knocked out by Myanmar.

Although the team defeated Indonesia to win bronze at the third-place match, the campaign was generally considered a failure.

According to local reports, after the departure of Toshiya Miura, Nguyen Huu Thang has agreed to take charge at the head coach of Vietnam national football team as well as Vietnam U-23.

VFF has set the same goal for him – to win gold at the SEA Games, but this time around, deputy chairman Doan Nguyen Duc said Thang and most of VFF officials will have to resign if the team fails to deliver.

“If Vietnam [U-23 team] fails to win gold medals at next year’s SEA Games, around eighty percent of VFF Standing Committee will resign”, Duc told local newspaper.

Many coaches, most notably Falko Gotz and Hoang Van Phuc, were sacked or resigned after failures at the SEA Games, but most of VFF officials survived. This is something to change in the future, Duc said.
