Guangzhou Football Association chairman Xie Zhiguang confirmed in an interview that the City of Flowers has submitted a bid to the Chinese Football Association, in order to become one of the host city for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Previously, China has announced that the country is preparing to bid for the 2023 edition of the continent’s biggest football championship. The bid will require at least six cities and eight stadiums to host a total of 51 matches in the tournament.
If selected, Guangzhou is expected to use its 58.000 seat-capacity Tianhe Stadium to host at least one of the opening match, the semi-finals or finals. According to the tournament’s regulations, these four matches are required to play in a minimum 40.000 seat-capacity stadium.
Guangzhou officials are confident that the staff are professional enough to host a continental championship.
“Our staff at the Guangzhou Football Association are extremely professional, each of them has worked in the football scene for several decades, whether at professional or amateur level. In recent year, Guangzhou has teams that take part in various AFC competitions, and we even twice host the AFC Champions League finals. We also have full support from the local government”, chairman Xie Zhiguang said.
The host country for 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be announced in the November 2017 meeting of the AFC Executive Committee.
