Melaka United goalkeeper Marco Stefan Petrovski, 18, is now in stable condition after he was believed to have been hit by lightning while training with his team in Krubong here at about 5pm today.
Malacca Hospital director Datuk Dr Za’aba Baba said Petrovski, of mixed Malaysian-Australian parentage, was rushed the hospital’s emergency unit after the incident.
“He received initial treatment at the emergency unit. After that he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment.
“His condition is stable and his breathing is supported with a ventilator,” he said in a statement here tonight.
Petrovski played for Sydney Olympic FC in Australia before moving to Melaka United this season.
Meanwhile, Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the incident happened when the players were dispersing after the training session.
“This is a totally unexpected incident because it was not raining heavily at the time,” he told reporters when met after the Melaka United-UiTM FC Premier League match at the Hang Jebat Stadium here tonight.
He said the family members who were now in Australia and Portugal had been informed and were expected to arrive tomorrow.
He said that the club would bear the cost of the flight tickets and their accommodation and other expenses.
