Philippines national football team have achieved their highest-ever FIFA ranking, moving up 19 places to 116th.
The Azkals made the biggest leap among Asian teams following their heroic 3-2 victory over North Korea in the joint qualifiers of 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup last month.
Thomas Dooley’s men also reclaimed their status as top ranked team of South-East Asia, three places above Thailand despite their regional rivals automatically advanced to the third round of World Cup qualifiers.
“I’m happy that our tireless efforts to improve the team has translated to a higher ranking,” said team manager Dan Palami was quoted by Inquirer.
“Our target was always to push Azkals to the top 100 and get the team to play better and at a higher level against the stronger teams in Asia.
“With our current ranking, we should aim high and believe that we can win the AFF Suzuki Cup and qualify for the Asian Cup.”
