Demba Ba has suffered a potentially-career ending leg break during a Chinese Super League game.
The former Chelsea striker was playing for his team Shanghai Shenhua against bitter rivals Shanghai SIPG on Sunday when he crumpled to the ground in agony after a fairly innocuous challenge.
Shenhua coach Gregorio Manzano said: “It could end his professional career.”
The 31-year-old star’s studs got planted in the turf following a tackle by Sun Xiang, who was attempting to get the ball when he accidentally caught the former Newcastle and West Ham forward.
In the shocking pictures, Ba’s leg is unrecognisable as it bends out of position – bringing back memories of awful leg breaks suffered by the likes of Eduardo, Alan Smith and Aaron Ramsey – and he falls to the floor in great pain.
His team-mates were quick to signal to the medical staff that he was in trouble and the star was quite clearly in a terrible way. He was later stretchered off.
