Malaysian midfielder Brendan Gan has confirmed that he will not participate in the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup after suffering a serious knee injury.
The 28-year-old footballer was stretched off during Malaysia’s 3-0 defeat in Indonesia last Tuesday. A scan later confirmed that Brendan Gan suffered a full rupture of the ACL in his left knee, an injury that will likely to force him to stay off the pitch for around 10 months.
“I have a full rupture of ACL… I was getting better and better during this season, and would have loved to have played in the AFF Suzuki Cup. But I’ve just got to move on now”, the midfielder told newspapers.
The midfielder has represented Malaysia since March, but has become increasingly important in the plans of Malaysia national team coach Ong Kim Swee. Assistant coach Brad Maloney said his absence would likely cause headaches for Ong.
“It’s a huge disappointment, particularly leading into the Suzuki Cup. Brendan has been a regular starter for the national team whenever he’s been available, and had cemented his spot in the team’s engine room”, Maloney said
