U19 team has qualified for the 2017 U20 World Cup after a 1-0 victory against host nation Bahrain in their AFC U-19 Championship quarterfinal.

This is the first time a Vietnam team has qualified for a youth World Cup tournament.

Overall, this is the fourth time a Southeast Asia team qualified for a U20 World Cup tournament, after Indonesia in 1979, Malaysia in 1997 (qualified as host team) and Myanmar in 2015.

The U20 World Cup has long been considered as one of the most prestigious youth tournaments. Football stars such as Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Paul Pogba have made their name playing in the tournament.
